Il Monticello 2024 "Groppolo" Vermentino Colli di Luni DOC
The 2024 Groppolo Vermentino is a bright, saline-tinged white that merges coastal freshness with Mediterranean orchard character. It’s a lively, elegant expression—refined yet with sea-air energy—ideal for sunlit meals and relaxed enjoyment.
Origins & Craftsmanship
Il Monticello is a Ligurian estate straddling the border between Liguria and Tuscany, in the Colli di Luni DOC, run by brothers Alessandro and Davide Neri. Their vineyards lie on sud-sud-ovest–facing slopes near Sarzana, at 100–120 meters above sea level, planted on soils combining silty sand, clay, and limestone.
“Groppolo” is made from 100 % Vermentino, farmed organically (and practiced biodynamically in spirit) in steep, well-vetted parcels. The 2024 vintage is vinified at low temperature, in stainless steel tanks, to preserve aromatics and freshness. After fermentation, the wine aged briefly on fine lees (with occasional bâtonnage) to integrate texture without overshadowing vibrancy.
Tasting Profile
Nose: Floral and energetic—white blossoms, citrus bloom (lemon zest, green citrus), pear, and hints of stone fruit. Underlying is marine salinity, crushed herbs (thyme, basil), and a whisper of sea mist.
Palate: Crisp and lively, with tension. Citrus (lemon, grapefruit) and orchard fruit (pear, apple) lead, edged by saline minerality and herbal nuance. The lees influence adds subtle texture and a slight creaminess to the mid-palate, while the finish remains clean, dry, and invigorating.
Finish: A lingering thread of sea salt, citrus peel, and floral lift. The wine tapers out with vibrancy—no heaviness, but a poised, refreshing exit.
