Massican 2024 Pinot Grigio
The 2024 Massican Pinot Grigio is a sophisticated reimagining of California white wine — bright, nervy, and Mediterranean in spirit. It skillfully balances crispness and depth, offering both easy drinkability and vinous detail, making it a standout among domestic Pinot Grigios.
Origins & Craftsmanship
Massican, founded by Dan Petroski, is one of Napa/Sonoma’s few white-wine–focused labels, inspired by the light, mineral whites of northeastern Italy.
The 2024 Pinot Grigio is sourced predominantly from Sonoma (74%) and Lodi (26 %) vineyards, and noted as “California appellation.”
Though labeled “Pinot Grigio,” this vintage is actually a blend of 81 % Pinot Grigio and 19 % Cortese, giving it structural lift and aromatic complexity.
In terms of vinification, the wine is fermented in neutral barrels (large foudre) and smaller wooden barrels, with a restrained approach to oak so as not to overshadow fruit and minerality.
Tasting Profile
Nose:
Bright aromas of citrus (lemon peel, grapefruit), green apple, white florals (acacia or almond blossom), and a softly saline edge.
Palate:
Medium-bodied, with crisp acidity. Notes of candied lemon peel, grapefruit zest, melon, green apple, and hints of dried herbs and saline minerality.
Finish:
Dry, clean, with lingering citrus bitterness, mineral tension, and a subtle textural grip from the Cortese component.
Food Pairings
-
Fresh shellfish (oysters, shrimp) or ceviche
-
Light grilled fish with lemon-herb sauce
-
Salads with citrus vinaigrette, green apple, or fennel
-
