St. George Single Malt Whisky Lot 22
The St George Lot 22 is a beautifully balanced expression of American single malt—reflecting mature barrel craft, rich malt character, and nuanced finishing. It marries fruit-forward complexity with restraint, making it both enjoyable now and worth reflecting upon as it evolves.
Origins & Craftsmanship
From the respected St. George Spirits distillery in Alameda, California, Lot 22 is part of their annual “Single Malt” series. The mash bill is 100% malted barley, roasted at multiple levels (including pale, crystal, chocolate and imported German beechwood-smoked malt) to add depth and complexity. The whiskey is matured in an array of used American and French oak barrels (including former bourbon, apple brandy, port and Sauternes-style wine barrels) and blended from whiskies aged approximately 4.5 to 8.5 years. It’s bottled at around 43% ABV. The finishing and blending strategy emphasises character while still preserving malt clarity.
Tasting Profile
Nose: Bright and inviting, with orange and grapefruit peel, creamy caramel, vanilla bean and rich malt biscuit. Further layers include hazelnut, walnut fudge, cherry cobbler, and soft cocoa.
Palate: Medium-bodied with a silky texture. Notes of roasted barley, milk chocolate, warm coffee, and cherry cola evolve into quince, grapefruit and dried stone-fruit. Smoke and wood-char elements emerge subtly, giving structure without overpowering the malt.
Finish: Long, warming and perfectly balanced—dark chocolate, roasted nuts, orange zest and a crisp mineral undertone linger beautifully. The blend of creamy and crisp elements makes the finish complex but approachable.
